Version 6 of the Rock Eucharist, titled Beautiful Day, debuted at Victoria Dock Church in Hull last Sunday and by all accounts it went down pretty well.

This version is quite heavily 80s influenced, as will be obvious from the list of music at the foot of this post, and probably the most ambitious we have ever attempted. However, the blending of secular with spiritual is probably the most seamless and successful we have managed to date, particularly where we have used secular riffs to underpin worship songs.

It is also fairly heavy on the keyboards, and we have much to thank key maestro Richard Fuller for in terms of replicating some classic keyboard sounds and riffs in a convincing fashion.

There are only two more events to come in this Spring season, with a third (to be held in Beverley Minster) still to be fixed, as St Michaels Church, Orchard Park have decided to take a step back from the RE and go for a more “outreachy” concert event in the Summer.

If you are anywhere near one of the venue churches, come down and join us, you won’t be disappointed (hopefully). If not, you could always book us for your own church.

Every blessing
theREIGN

Songs and part songs used in RE6: Beautiful Day
Sledgehammer (Gabriel), Come Now Is The Time To Worship (Doerksen), Feeling Good (Newley/Bricusse), Jump (Van Halen/Van Halen/Anthony/Roth), Let Everything That Has Breath (Redman), Beautiful Day (Bono/The Edge/Clayton/Mullen Jnr), Wish You Were Here (Waters/Gilmour), New Day (Cantelon), Another Day In Paradise (Collins), The Final Countdown (Tempest), Our God (Tomlin/Redman), Sweet Child Of Mine (Rose/Slash/Stradlin/McKagan/Adler), When I Survey (Watts/Cooper/Cooper), Surrender (James), You’re Beautiful (Wickham), 10,000 Reasons (Redman), My Glorious (Smith/Garrard), Happy Day (Hughes)

Apologies to all for the lack of news and updates on here recently … my university studies and the general business of my music ministry in general as well as theREIGN in particular have taken up a lot more time than expected. So here, as we look forward to the final RE5 event in July and to the writing and introduction of RE6 in the Autumn I thought it would be good to take a few minutes to look back over where RE5 sits in the whole scheme of things.

Personally, I think it is probably the best so far, for a number of reasons. Primarily, it flows beautifully. The sections mesh together very nicely and the whole event has a kind of seamless quality to it which has taken 4 or 5 versions to really capture the way we want it. On top of that, the change of minister from Rachel to Andy has introduced a new dynamic … not better, nor worse, just different … and his love of narrative and storytelling has shone through in the way we put across the messages of both RE4 and RE5.

The use of the VLOG style for RE5′s “sermon” was also pretty inspired (and I can say that safely knowing that it wasn’t my idea – it was Andy’s), and gave the whole event a different feel.

We haven’t taken RE5 quite as far afield as RE4, but it is good to be focussed in Hull and surrounds from time to time, as this is where our heart lies and where our ministry is. That said, we will be taking it to Church Stretton in July, and we are looking forward to leading a communion service in a garage for the first time.

The final part of RE5 that I enjoyed was the band being prepared to take on some more complex musical themes this time around, especially when you consider two members had never been involved in the RE before. Using Genesis’ Turn It On Again (and its 13/8 time signature in the key of Bb) as the intro to the whole thing was pretty adventurous, and I remain eternally grateful that Phil Gray was around for every single RE event this time around.

The use of a piece of film score (Ennio Morricone’s Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) was also a new departure, and required some serious work from Richard and Rob to get that up and working … once John had “borrowed” the idea from Metallica.

Interestingly, as we were putting this whole thing together, Billy Idol’s White Wedding, which we used for the confession, suddenly began to pop up all over the place, not least in Hollyoaks, and the aforementioned Ecstasy of Gold took centre stage in the Health Lottery’s wall-to-wall advertisements.

All in all, RE5 has done everything we could have hoped for it to do. It is very enjoyable to lead and has been well received everywhere we have taken it. Most importantly, the Lord has really blessed both theREIGN and the congregations that have attended through it. That is, after all, the most important thing.

I have summarised below the music used.

RE6 kicks off in the Autumn and two dates are already in the diary. Get in quick if you would like one.

Every blessing,
David Cooper

Songs and part songs used in RE5: Burning Heart
Turn It On Again (Collins/Banks/Rutherford), Strength Will Rise (Brown), White Wedding (Idol), Miracle Maker (Delirious?), The Chain (Buckingham/Fleetwood/McVie/McVie/Nicks), Our God (Tomlin/Redman), New Year’s Day (Bono/The Edge/Clayton/Mullen Jr), A Long And Winding Road (Cooper), Livin’ On A Prayer (Bon Jovi/Sambora/Child), Father God I Wonder (Smale), The House Of The Rising Sun (trad.), Mighty To Save (Morgan/Fielding), Bohemian Like You (Taylor-Taylor), I Stand Amazed (Gabriel), You Chose The Cross (Layzell), In Your Arms (Cooper), Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) (Newton/Tomlin), Ecstasy Of Gold (Morricone), Give Thanks To The Lord (Tomlin), Praise Is Rising (Brown), Unchanging (Tomlin)

In the wake of another successful run of Rock Eucharist events, we are now looking towards our Autumn 2012 season and version 6 (as yet untitled). We have set aside four dates rather than the usual five for a couple of reasons, but mainly to accommodate the 10th anniversary concert for the band which will take place on Saturday 3rd November … right in the middle of RE season.

As you will see from the updated calendar, St Marks, Anlaby Common have already snagged Sunday 21st October, which leaves the following dates up for grabs:

Sunday 7 October
Sunday 18 November
Sunday 2 December

We have at least three churches interested already, so get in quick if you want one of these dates. Beyond that, we will be filling our Spring schedule in due course, so there will be further opportunities for you to book an event for your church.

We would love to hear from you.

The Autumn 2011 series of Communion on the Rocks events is now complete, with four events across October and November giving a distinctly local flavour to proceedings, in stark contrast to the nation-trotting Spring series.

The as yet untitled version 5 will be debuted at Victoria Dock church in Central Hull on Sunday 2 October, taking in Sutton (to the East of the City) and Hessle (to the West) before heading to Scarborough to close the season on Saturday 26th November.

Originally, the band set aside 5 dates, but one was “hi-jacked” by the Hunsley Youth Trust worship event, an event we are absolutely delighted to be invited to be involved with.

If you can make one of these events, it would be great to see you there for an evening of traditional, and yet totally non-traditional, worship. If not, why not snag one of our Spring 2012 RE5 dates for your own church (details later in the year).

A few weeks off before breaking out the guitar in anger again (really must get it re-strung this time), and time to reflect on how things are hanging in the RE world at the moment.

The Autumn 2010 and Spring 2011 seasons have been strange, even by our standards. Wonderful but strange. Rachel got a big send off in November, only to guest for us twice on consecutive weekends in February and March, Andy got his feet under the table by expending more energy in each 75 minutes of RE4 than he does in leading every other service throughout the year, we travelled to London and a TV Studio in Warrington as well as Swanland and Anlaby (which are less than a mile apart).

Some things, however, remain the same. Apart from my continued ability to end RE events with fewer strings than I start them with, the impact of the events and their ability to touch people goes on unabated. One attendee told us after one that he hadn’t felt as close to God in 20 years as he did during the RE. Ultimately, everything else aside, that one conversation makes all of the blood, sweat and tears it takes to put these events together absolutely worthwhile.

I usually do this on theREIGN’s website (not sure why), but I have outlined below all of the music used in RE4, which was a combination of greatest hits (Song 2 getting another outing) and brand new stuff.

There are some significant changes going on with the band, so make sure you check in with the band’s site over the next few days to keep up to date with all of that.

Finally, if you have attended one of these events, either recently or otherwise, please do let us know what you thought of it (good and bad).

Every blessing,
David

Music used in ‘Taking The Step’
Lord, I Lift Your Name On High (Founds), Riders On The Storm (Morrison, Krieger, Manzarek, Densmore), May The Words Of My Mouth (Hughes), With Or Without You (Bono, Edge, Clayton, Mullen Jr), Blessed Be Your Name (Redman), Starlight (Bellamy), Happy Day (Hughes), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Cobain, Grohl, Novoselic), All Right Now (Fraser, Rodgers), We Believe (Kendrick), Chasing Cars (Lightbody), Never Failing Love (Cooper), Song 2 (Albarn), Every Sound I Make (Cooper), Here I Am To Worship (Hughes), Consuming Fire (Hughes), I Want To Serve The Purpose Of God (Altrogge), Don’t Stop Believin’ (Cain, Perry, Schon), Revival (Mark)

After leading us in 26 events over three and a bit years, the final chords of Robin Marks’ Revival brought down the curtain on Rachel Ganney’s tenure at our first ever RE event in Greatfield and, with our shorter that usual Autumn season behind us, I would like to take a few moments to reflect on what was an emotional evening for all of us.

I think it is fair to say that without Rachel and Paul, the RE probably would not exist. It was originally Paul’s brainchild … in fact, if memory serves, I believe he was talking with the Greenbelt worship team and rather opportunistically announced that we could do a Rock Eucharist for the festival if they wanted it. When they said “Yes”, Paul, Rachel and I had to get around a table and decide what one of those actually was and how we might pull it off. Even then, it is hard to see where it might have gone without Paul being married to a Minister who was just crazy enough to agree to lead one.

Since then, the RE has taken on a life of its own through its various versions, and Rachel has been a loud and enthusiastic advocate for the events in the church. She also became very much part and parcel of theREIGN family and we will certainly miss her insight, her humility and her desire to use this resource to bring God’s people before him in worship in new and interesting ways.

As far as I am concerned, it was quite fitting that her final local event (she will be “guesting” with us in Warrington in March) should be an experiment. Alison Gilchrist, vicar at St Hilda’s Church in Greatfield went into the event without any idea of how it would be received, how many might attend – or indeed whether anyone would attend at all – or what impact it may have on her Church.

That, ultimately, is what the RE is all about – bringing the word and worship of God to his people in an accessible and reverent fashion … and sprinkled with famous rock riffs.

Rachel, if you happen to read this, theREIGN would like to thank you, publicly, for everything you have brought to us, and brought us to, over these 39 months and 26 events.

We will miss you, and we wish you (and Paul) every blessing in your new church and ministry.

David

Autumn is always a time of change for Communion on the Rocks, as it is traditionally the season in which we introduce a new version of the event, and 2010 is no exception. Taking The Step (version 4) is to be debuted this coming Sunday at Sutton Methodist Church, which sees us step outside the Church of England for the first time and we are delighted to be able to join our Methodist Brothers and Sisters in celebrating Holy Communion together in this way.

The new event sees some major changes, and some familiar favourites sitting nicely alongside each other, as we re-visit some of the most successful forms of liturgy from prior versions of the event, including RE2′s ever popular Eucharistic Prayer set to Blur’s Song 2.

However, this year, far greater changes are afoot as we wish a fond, and somewhat emotional, farewell to Rachel Ganney, who has led these events with huge skill, reverence and flair for the last 3 years. See theREIGN’s Blog for further details about her and Paul’s move to the big smoke.

Rachel’s are big shoes to fill, and handed that unenviable task is Revd Andrew (Andy) Simpson, from All Saints’ Church, Hessle. Whilst new to working with theREIGN, Andy and lead vocalist David Cooper have known each other for over 25 years and, truth be told, David’s life would have taken some very different turns along the way if that friendship had never existed.

We welcome Andy into the fold, and time will tell whether he lives to regret his comments (immediately following attending RE2 at Greenbelt_08) that if we ever had a opening to lead the events, he would “love to do it”. He will make his debut leading the forthcoming Taking The Step event at Holy Trinity in Barrow on Sunday 21 November 2010.

Please pray for Rachel and Paul as they begin this exciting new chapter of their life, and for Andy as he takes his own step into Communion on the Rocks.

Every Blessing,

Digital TV is great … all these channels, and still nothing to watch. Nothing new, anyway. In truth, I have been greatly enjoying the opportunity to re-watch Babylon 5 (my favourite TV show of all time) all the way through on FX, in spite of already owning all the episodes on DVD. Check it out, weeknights at 6pm or all afternoon Sunday from 1pm onwards.

Anyhoo, back on topic … on Thursday of this week, the final episode of season 4 (The Deconstruction of Falling Stars) was on, and the first act of the episode consisted of a “talking heads” type discussion show where the recent happenings in the story were examined by journalistic voices. The presenter of the show framed this using the word “Selah”, which appears a lot in the Psalms, and was taken to mean “Pause and Consider” in the context of the show.

Please note … I am aware that, in fact, the word is tough to translate into English and may mean nothing of the sort, but just go with me on this one, OK?

Given the three week break between the RE3 event at Scarborough on the 7th March, and the next one in Leven on the 28th, this inspired me to do a bit of pausing and considering on where we, and the RE events, are at the moment. Selah!

We have now done a total of 21 RE events over the past two and a half years (5 of RE1, and 8 each of RE2 and RE3, for those keeping score) and for us, as a band, they continue to provide the bulk of our diary and probably the most powerful expression of God’s Kingdom that we undertake through our ministry.

We have recently joked that the next RE could be a “greatest hits” of the three existing versions, lifting the Eucharistic Prayer from RE2, the Confession from RE3, the Intercessions from RE1, for example, and stitching the whole thing together into a new event, but instead a new and fresh RE4 will be born over the Summer of 2010 for rolling out in the Autumn season.

From my perspective, I think all three versions have much to commend them.

Whilst Heaven in the Ordinary is probably the weakest overall, it was the first, involved much trial and error, and was ultimately born of that great moment of stress and anxiety that screams “can we really do this?” into your ear at maximum volume. Also, no event can be bad when you play Smells Like Teen Spirit and Blessed Be Your Name almost back to back.

Rising Sun learned the lessons of RE1, and improved the whole package, whilst stealing some of its best bits for itself … stand up once again Blessed Be Your Name. This was also where we started to experiment more with using familiar secular intros to lead into worship songs. And all of this is topped off with the magnificent Eucharistic Prayer inviting a room full of Homer Simpsons (sorry, Damon Albarns) to scream “WooHoo” at the top of their voices in celebration.

Though We Are Many, again learned much from its predecessor and moved things on again. A much larger game of “Spot The Riff” can now be enjoyed as Paul liberally sprinkles famous guitar lines throughout the event. As a whole, it is probably the most coherent in terms of its theme, perhaps simply because we used our own rather than sticking with the theme of that year’s Greenbelt Festival. Nothing quite reaches the heights of Song 2, though.

The bottom line is that I love doing these events. The sense of worship, joy and celebration is absolutely tangible, and the way God has moved in us and in those churches where events have been held has been extraordinary to behold, and their appeal to those aged 8 to 80 continues to baffle and delight me.

God has used these events in powerful ways both in churches and in individuals, and I praise and thank Him that I have been able to give my meagre talents to His service in this way, and I am very much looking forward to the final two in this Spring series and then the annual brainstorm that is working out which songs we can realistically use in RE4, and the annual ritual of Paul’s “You really expect me to play that?” face when we decide on a particularly tricky intro … stand up Sweet Child of Mine.

If you get a chance to get down to one of these events, do. It will be an eye-opener and no mistake. If not, why not invite us to lead one in your church. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Every blessing,

For anyone who has been experiencing “interesting” happenings over the last 24 hours, we have taken the opportunity to move the site to a new webhost, which has entailed picking up that database and files and shifting them lock, stock and barrel to a new server.

As the site was previously run from a sub-folder on theREIGN’s main site, and is now a completely separate entity, this created a little consternation but, thanks to the tireless work of Tim Canty, the site is now completely up and running in its new home and without losing any of the content. In fact, if I hadn’t just told you it had moved, you might never have noticed.

The new setup gives us a little more flexibility and, as I say, separates it from theREIGN’s site which should make life a little easier in keeping track of developing the two sites along different lines.

As always, let us know if anything doesn’t work the way you expect it to and feedback on the RE events themselves as they take place. It is always good to get comments, good and bad, as these all help us to make these events better and better.

Every blessing,
